I wrote my bachelor’s thesis (in Finnish, download PDF here)) about the effects of flipped classroom teaching as well as its different forms. The thesis is a literature review in which I analyze different empirical studies on the flipped classroom method. In addition, I looked at the method from a more historical viewpoint, drawing on the traditions of constructivism and active learning. I found out that flipped classroom teaching has caused some benefits in test results as well as homework and student perceptions. However, flipped classroom teaching is also seen as more demanding, and many of the empirical studies have been somewhat scientifically dubious.
I feel like the thesis was a valuable learning experience in itself, and a good exercise in both self-organization and scientific writing. The thesis was well received, getting the highest possible mark.
